INDONESIA – Rebuilding after the Tsunami
Context
On 25 October 2010, after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, a violent tsunami destroyed the Mentawai Islands off the shore of Sumatra, leaving 448 dead, 449 wounded, more than 300 missing and 13,000 displaced persons. After this disaster, the Indonesian government decided to permanently relocate inland the distressed populations who used to live on the beaches.
The Indonesian Red Cross assists the communities of the Island of South Pagai, the most hit of the four islands of the archipelago. Namely, it provides health care and psycho-social support to the tsunami victims. It also coordinates the construction of 217 houses
Four months after the disaster, the construction of the 217 houses was practically completed. However, in the new villages, communities do not yet have access to water, and there is no sustainable sanitation. The people who settled recently in these villages identify access to drinkable water and sanitation as being their priority.
Objectives
- Setting up networks for the distribution of drinkable water and sanitation structures;
- Improvement of hygiene practices on the island of South Pagai to reduce the risks of water-related diseases;
- Reinforcement of the capacities of the Indonesian Red Cross (Western Sumatra section) for water, hygiene and sanitation.
Expected results
This project should enable village people to use the water supply networks and channelling of springs. This way, the recipients will be trained in maintaining these infrastructures and will use them daily. Access to water will be safe and easy for everyone (children, old and disabled people).
Permanent toilets / showers will be used daily by the communities. The recipients will be trained in using and maintaining the sanitary infrastructures. In fact, the number of water-induced diseases in the areas of intervention will decrease.
The Indonesian Red Cross will be better prepared to respond to sanitary emergencies (drinkable water, sanitation infrastructures and promotion of hygiene), frequent in this area of the country.
