MALI – Support to motherless children

Our partner on site: The Congregation of the Daughters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Mali, which manages the Orphanage “la Providence Dofini”, a care centre for motherless children.

Context

In the region of San, in Mali, an ancestral custom prevents motherless children from being raised and accepted within the community. Rejected, they often die a few days after birth. Several years ago, a nun decided to rebel against this custom and began taking in the newborns. Since then, an orphanage with a capacity of 50 children has been built in 2007, as well as a nursery school that can accommodate 200 children. Thanks to this structure, the small children of the neighbouring villages can now go to school.

The centre, planned for 50 orphans, cares for more than 60 today. Return to the families is organised progressively. However, even if mentalities are changing, some families keep on having an attitude of rejection, whereas newborns in danger keep on arriving.

Objectives

  • To enable motherless newborns to grow up and live in the orphanage up to the age of 18 months so that their “extended” family can take over;
  • To generate income to attain self-sufficiency, namely thanks to the creation of an orchard, truck farming, livestock, and through registration fees to the nursery school for the children of neighbouring villages;
  • To equip the new premises and this way relieve the congestion of the centre.

Objectives

  • Motherless children cared for in the centre are sheltered, fed and treated in good conditions.
  • A male nurse is employed full time;
  • A paediatrician visits the orphanage twice a month;
  • Drilling of a well, a system for water conveyance and drop by drop irrigation have been set up to enable food self-sufficiency; the production of the orchard, the vegetable garden and livestock have increased considerably;
  • The management is looking for financings for the construction of new premises so as to accommodate separately girls and boys who cannot go back to their families. These new premises will be equipped by the Monegasque Red Cross.

Perspectives

  • Progresses in the field of health and food should enable to work better on the matter of community hygiene, care of small children and the elaboration of by-laws;

in time, the orphanage will operate totally independently in its staffing, its internal operation, its investment decisions and its supply solutions.
