MALI – PROJECT OF WATER CONVEYANCE IN BOUGOUDRE

Context

In Mali, only 43% of the population has access to an infrastructure of water distribution within a radius of less than 5 kilometres.

The Malian village of Bougoudré is part of the region of Kayes. This region, with a Sahelian-type climate, is regularly confronted to water shortages. Presently, the supply of drinking water in the village is uncertain. Indeed, there are only a few water sources which no longer operate or very badly, for want of structures, maintenance or spare parts. Besides, most of the traditional or modern wells run dry during the long, 9-month dry season. Many deaths of children and vulnerable persons result from waterborne diseases caught during this period. A private donor of Monaco has been aware of this alarming situation and decided to bear most of the costs of this project, to enable the 1,800 inhabitants of Bougoudré to have year-round access to water in sufficient quantity and quality.

Purpose

• To enable 1,800 persons of that area to have water source and improve health in that Sahel region.

Results obtained

• This project was the subject of a thorough case study by students of the International University of Monaco (IUM), under the framework of their 2010 university curriculum. Some of them also took part in the fund-raising activity and gave a cheque of 1,037 Euros to Dr. Michel-Yves MOUROU on 10 July 2010.
• An exploratory mission and prospecting work were achieved after establishing cartography in cooperation with the local authorities and the Malian Red Cross.

Perspectives

The project is ready to be implemented. The geophysical study of the sub-soil of Bougoudré has been done, a drilling company has been selected, and the inhabitants of Bougoudré should have drinking water in a sufficient quantity before the end of 2011.

Project Note

Purpose : Prospection and water conveyance works for the population of the village of Bougoudré situated 2 km from the Mauritanian border, inside the Yélimané circle, Kaye region, in Western Mali.

Recipients : 1,800 inhabitants of the region.

Partners : Malian Red Cross, IUM (International University of Monaco), local Malian authorities, association of the Bougoudré nationals in France.

Budget : 35,000 Euros

Period : 2010-2011
