MALI – Fountain of light in Kenenkoun

Context

Today, it is undeniable that access of rural populations to basic energy services is an indispensable development vehicle. In this context, basic lighting plays an important part.

With modern lighting, one can extend the day’s work, improve school children’s living conditions, and elaborate literacy programmes for adults…

Objectives

The “fountain of light” is a station equipped with photovoltaic panels producing electricity from solar energy and used to recharge portable lamps.

The project objectives are to :

• Enable 200 families to have solar lamps.
• Develop evening activities: trade, studies, literacy, public meetings …
• Reduce the household costs of lighting.
• Reduce the number of household accidents connected to the use of oil lamps (burns, fire, …).
• Generate resources for the community.
• Favour better learning conditions for children and adults in the village. 

Objectives achieved.

• 95% of the lamps are rented.
• 190 families benefit from the project.
• One job was created.
• Income-generating activities are being multiplied in the village.
• Literacy courses for adults have been set up thanks to the lighting of two classrooms. 

Perspectives

The project has almost attained self-sufficiency. Malian staff has been trained in the maintenance and repair of lamps, whereas the stock manager’s job is funded by the lamp rental.

A regular follow-up will enable to make the latest adjustments before passing on the torch to the management committee made up of village people, with the support of the local committee of the Malian Red Cross.

Project Note

Purpose : Set up of a centralised system of rental of portable lamps with photovoltaic energy in the village of Kénenkoun

Recipients : 200 families, i.e. about 1,600 persons

Partners : Malian Red Cross

Budget : 52,000 Euros

Period : The project, inaugurated in December 2008, will be upheld until end 2013. At that time, the Kénenkoun community will be self-sufficient in the management of this source of energy.
