Earthquakes and tsunami in Indonesia: the Red Cross mobilised
Published on 03.10.2018The Monaco Red Cross is calling on your generosity to help the thousands of people affected by this new disaster.
Monaco, 01/10/18 – Voluntary workers and employers from the Indonesian Red Cross are racing against the clock to help the survivors of the earthquakes and tsunami which struck Central Sulawesi on Friday, causing the death of at least 832 people and injuring many others, in particular in the city of Palu.
The exact extent of this disaster is not yet known; communication systems are still down and rescue teams have not yet reached the Donggala district – the closest to the epicentre of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake.
Over 175 Indonesian Red Cross volunteers are working relentlessly on site. Search and rescue teams, medical and psychosocial support teams, fifteen ambulances and twenty-two truckloads of water have been deployed, whilst emergency equipment is on its way for distribution: tarpaulins, blankets, jerry cans, clothing and mattresses. The roads have been severely damages, making the transportation of aid difficult and meaning that the teams sometimes need 10 hours to reach the region hit by the disaster. Ships are also delivering aid by sea.
The Monaco Red Cross conducted a water, hygiene and sanitation programme with the Indonesian Red Cross in the wake of the 2010 tsunami which hit the Mentawai Islands. It is therefore quite natural that it will also be providing support for action implemented by the Red Cross in the Sulawesi region.
