Monaco, 31st August 2016 – Barely one week after the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that hit central Italy, the first funerals are being held across villages in Lazio.
In just a few minutes during the night of 24th August 2016, entire families were decimated. Subsequently, close to 637 aftershocks continued to strike the region concerned, further complicating rescue operations. In a few hours, more than 400 people had to be hospitalised, 40 of whom are in a critical condition, while over 2000 people are now homeless. . The buildings, most of which were old, did not meet the new anti-seismic standards and collapsed.
THE ITALIAN RED CROSS IN THE FRONT LINE
A medical station has been installed for survivors. Hundreds of emergency vehicles and over 70 rescue teams have been deployed in the area. Local businesses are providing basic necessities to the population.
