Monaco, 31st August 2016 – Barely one week after the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that hit central Italy, the first funerals are being held across villages in Lazio.

In just a few minutes during the night of 24th August 2016, entire families were decimated. Subsequently, close to 637 aftershocks continued to strike the region concerned, further complicating rescue operations. In a few hours, more than 400 people had to be hospitalised, 40 of whom are in a critical condition, while over 2000 people are now homeless. . The buildings, most of which were old, did not meet the new anti-seismic standards and collapsed.

THE ITALIAN RED CROSS IN THE FRONT LINE

A medical station has been installed for survivors. Hundreds of emergency vehicles and over 70 rescue teams have been deployed in the area. Local businesses are providing basic necessities to the population.

The Italian Red Cross is offering support to the authorities who have set up and are administering emergency shelters. Thanks to over 500 volunteers immediately deployed on site, it has provided emergency aid with search teams and rescue dogs, volunteers specialised in psycho-social support, mobile kitchens enabling over 10,000 meals to be prepared every day, 20 ambulances and medical staff.

From the 21 regional branches of the Italian Red Cross, 13 have deployed emergency doctors, provided vehicles, tents, camp beds, mattresses, blankets, generators and mobile toilets, among other contributions.

The Italian Red Cross has also activated its Restoring Family Links programme in order to help individuals who are looking for missing relatives.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

Humanitarian needs are still being assessed in the area concerned. The Italian Red Cross will continue its efforts as long as necessary, including in the post-emergency phase, in order to support victims until they resume a normal life, with the assistance of a team of rescue workers from the Monaco Red Cross, who are ready to intervene.
