Africa is experiencing a serious food crisis, the Red Cross makes a commitment

The Monaco Red Cross is launching an appeal for solidarity to help curb one of the widest food crises which is currently rife in Africa

MONACO, 6^th April 2017 – In Southern Sudan one in three households is in urgent need of food. In Nigeria, in one state alone, Borno, 300,000 children will suffer from severe malnutrition over the next 12 months. In Yemen, only 45% of health facilities are functioning, less than 30% of the drugs and medical equipment necessary manage to enter the country and some hospitals have reported an increase of 150% in the number of children suffering from malnutrition.

The situation is urgent. Famine is threatening the lives of tens of millions of people today in Africa, chiefly in Southern Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, as well as Yemen and Nigeria.

The Monaco Red Cross, which is about to bring to a successful conclusion a project to improve the living conditions and means of subsistence of people living in the Soum region in Burkina Faso, is taking action today to provide emergency financial aid to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which has been active for several years among the needy in the countries affected by this new crisis.

No “isolated” crisis exists anymore in the world in which we live today. We face these problems together, and what is happening on one side of the Earth can have direct consequences on the other side. These major crises can lead to a great movement of people and to increasing insecurity and extremism.

That is why the Monaco Red Cross is appealing to your generosity so that action can be taken now among those who need it.
