Violent earthquake in Morocco

Published on 12.09.2023

Sunday 10th September 2023

Shortly after 11 pm on Friday 8th September 2023, a violent earthquake of approximately magnitude 7 struck Morocco, the epicentre of which was located in the Al Haouz province, about 70 km southwest of Marrakech.

Other than Marrakech, the tremor was felt in Rabat, Casablanca, Agadir and Essaouira, spreading panic among the population.

The tremor caused many buildings to collapse, especially in the provinces and towns of Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chichaoua, Ouarzazate, and Marrakech. Extensive housing wreckage can be seen in the streets of the medina in Marrakech, as well as cars crushed by stones.

The death toll, which is still provisional, now exceeds 2,000. In the aftermath of the deadly earthquake, 2,059 are injured, of whom 1,404 are in a critical condition, according to official reports.

Due to the scale of the disaster, at the request of its President, H.S.H. Prince Albert II, the Monaco Red Cross is launching an appeal for public donations.

You can make a donation, specifying “Earthquake Morocco”:

  • By bank cheque (to the order of the Monaco Red Cross – Earthquake Morocco) or by cash to be left at the Monaco Red Cross’s main address – 27 Bld de Suisse, 98000 Monaco (tel. +377 97.97.68.00).
  • Via our website www.croix-rouge.mc, selecting “Earthquake Morocco” on the online donation page

CRM has already contacted the Moroccan Red Crescent offering its support to the earthquake victims.

Our heartfelt thanks for your generosity.
